PhD Students at the lab Summer 2025

We’re excited to welcome University of Plymouth PhD students back to the lab this summer!

The team at Brixham Laboratory spent Spring 2024 refurbishing and setting up two laboratories for the University of Plymouth Marine Biology Students to use for their research projects. Working closely with Ben Ciotti, lecturer in Marine Biology, that summers PhD project was a great success.

This summers project aims to refine a molecular index of growth for juvenile fish, using Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) concentration in tissues. Growth is a key indicator of juvenile fish habitat quality, reflecting survival and performance in the environment. RNA concentration is a promising and precise index of growth rate, allowing insights into growth variation at fine temporal and spatial scales, and larger population scales. However, species-specific calibration under controlled conditions is needed to improve its reliability for juvenile common sole (Solea solea), a valuable species in the UK.

Research funded by the FSBI, and the ARIES doctoral training partnership.
